Post caps are one of the fastest ways to change how a fence or deck looks without touching the structure itself. No permits or lengthy rebuild, just an afternoon project that protects your posts and finishes the look.

Here’s what we hear most from homeowners and contractors deciding which style, material, and finish is right for their space.

What does a post cap actually do, beyond looking good?

A post cap seals the top of a fence or deck post, keeping rain and snow from pooling inside and causing rotting, splitting, or rust over time. On top of protection, it gives the post a polished, intentional look instead of a raw and unfinished cut end.

Nuvo Iron caps are designed to protect the post and look good doing it.

What materials do post caps come in, and which should I choose?

Nuvo Iron post caps are available in a few core materials, each suited to different needs:

  • Galvanized steel (Eazy-Cap™): heavy-gauge, powder-coated, and built for long-term durability in exposed outdoor conditions.
  • Marine-grade aluminum (pyramid, ball, and pineapple styles): lightweight, rust-resistant, and well suited to more decorative, ornamental looks.
  • Rigid plastic: the most cost-effective option, perfect for lighter-duty or temporary applications.

How do I know what size post cap I need?

Post caps are sized to the actual post measurement, not always the “nominal” size printed on the lumber. A 4″ x 4″ nominal post is actually 3.5″ x 3.5″, and a 6″ x 6″ nominal post is actually 5.5″ x 5.5″.

Rough or undressed lumber, however, measures at its full stated size (e.g. 4″ x 4″ is actually 4″ x 4″).

Before ordering, carefully measure your post rather than assuming based on the label. This is the single most common sizing mistake.

You can check the exact fit on the ‘Features’ tab of any post cap product page. For example, the 5″ x 5″ Eazy-Cap™ Pyramid Post Cap is sized specifically for a 5″ x 5″ nominal post.

Are post caps hard to install?

Not at all. Nuvo Iron post caps are designed for quick, straightforward installation. Our Eazy-Cap™ line uses a patented pressure-fit design that requires no screws or adhesive. Just place it over the post and it stays put. Ornamental styles like our pyramid, ball, and pineapple caps are seated with a rubber mallet for a snug fit, then secured with a few screws.

Before getting started, watch the quick installation video or find the full PDF instructions under the ‘Documents tab’ on each post cap product page

Do post caps fit any type of post?

Our post caps are designed to install on wood, composite, vinyl, iron, and aluminum posts, which makes them a flexible upgrade regardless of what your existing fence or deck is built from.

Just remember to check the specific product page for compatible post materials and sizing before ordering, since some styles are built for a particular post type.

How do I maintain post caps once they’re installed?

Our caps are designed to thrive under minimal maintenance. Most clean easily with soap and water, and the powder-coated finishes on steel and aluminum caps are designed to resist peeling, blistering, and UV fading.

Which cap is best for me?

There’s no single “best” cap. It depends on the look you’re going for and how much of a project you want installation to be. Here’s a quick side-by-side to help narrow it down:
