The sleek, smooth lines of an iron fence profile are unmistakably eye-catching. Ours offers unparalleled durability, style, and long-term value. Whether you’re going with an iron fence for the first time or just interested in understanding more about this type of fencing, our fence expert Adam sat down with us to answer some of the common questions we get.
FEATURES/BENEFITS
Q: What are the benefits of iron fence over other materials like wood?
A: An iron fence offers more longevity than one made of a material like wood. We offer a ten-year warranty on our iron fence, so you also have added peace of mind in comparison to other materials like wood. An iron fence also offers a different look than a wood one, so aside from the material benefits it can provide a different level of curb appeal to your home.
Q: How does the lifespan of iron fence differ from wood?
A: The lifespan of iron fencing is much greater than that of wood due to the material itself which offers superior strength, build quality, and better resistance to wear and tear. In some cases, you may get around 10 years, with proper maintenance, of a wood fence, but some customers have maintained their iron fence for 20+ years. There are ways to increase the longevity of your wood fence such as staining it or using our post caps to prevent the wear and tear of daily sunlight hitting the top of your posts.
Although this is a great way to extend the life of a wood fence, the properties of iron paired with our multi-layer coating process, create a significantly longer-lasting product.
Q: Can iron fence withstand different weather conditions?
A: While iron fence is perfect through a variety of different conditions, you should be mindful of where it’s installed. Things like salt spray from a nearby major road, lawn fertilizer chemicals or saltwater from your pool will affect the lifespan of your fence. If these conditions affect you, we recommend you choose an aluminum fence – with similar profiles to iron, it will offer a slight advantage longer term in these conditions. If you don’t have things like this around you, opt for an iron fence which will provide you with a bit of savings compared to aluminum.
Q: How secure is iron fence?
A: Iron fence is much more secure than alternative materials like wood and vinyl due to build quality and durability. Our Residential Fence is both ornamental and perfect for keeping intruders at bay, but if you’re looking at Commercial or Industrial Fence, that’s tailor-made for security reasons and an even more superb security feature. You can also look into opting for a taller fence, or variety of gate options for your property as well to increase security.
PROFILE SELECTION/PRICING
Q: How do I figure out which profile to choose? What styles and designs are available?
A: If you’re looking for fencing for your home or residential areas look at our Gem Collection.
- Gem Collection styles can be viewed in our brochure or website.
- To browse our Commercial Iron Fence, check out the States Collection.
- If you’re looking for Industrial Fence, browse our Memorial Collection.
Q: What is the Nuvo Iron Gem Collection?
A: The Nuvo Iron Gem Collection is our iron fence line for residential areas. It consists of a variety of beautiful iron fence profiles. Browse these profiles to see our style selection, perfect for any homeowner to choose from. Our ‘Gem Collection’ is built with picket and rail sizes that offer the most out of iron fence while still being a cost-effective option for a homeowner. We also produce a commercial and industrial iron fence that is built from slightly larger pickets and rails but increases cost so that is best saved for businesses or industrial areas.
Q: How much does iron fence cost?
A: Iron fence pricing varies, and depends on the dealer and location you’re purchasing it from. Our Gem Collection, due to being made with smaller pickets and smaller rails, will be more cost-effective than the States and Memorial Collections. Call your local dealer and explain your project to get a quote on your fence. To find a dealer, visit our “Where to Buy” page today.
Q: I’m looking at iron fence and want the most premium, long-lasting option. What should I look at?
A: If you want premium and long-lasting, choose aluminum for any of our fence profiles. It’s a high-end option but will last you through the seasons.
Q: I’m looking for a more simple and budget-friendly iron fence option. What should I look at?
A: The Garnet profile from the Gem Collection is an excellent choice if you’re looking to keep your cost low but still go with iron fencing. The cost-savings with this profile are due to the design featuring two rails instead of three.
Q: Am I better off purchasing a more premium wood fence or an entry-level iron fence profile?
A: Ultimately, lumber is lumber. You need to determine the main use of your outdoor space to answer this question; are you looking for privacy or a fence that’ll last through many seasons? If a full iron fence is not within the budget, try doing iron in the front of your home for curb appeal and security and have it meet a wood or chain link fence in your backyard. This offers you some of the benefits or iron while still saving in the overall project cost.
Q: What makes one iron fence profile more expensive than the next?
A: Three-rail options and adding a finial or a pinched picket can make your fence profile a little bit more expensive than the base option due to extra material and labor. If you love the look of these more decorative fence styles and you’re investing in iron fencing, we do think you should go with a profile you love as the longevity of these fences mean it’ll be a part of your home’s landscape for years to come.
- Another thing that can add to the cost of your project is if you add an arched gate to finish your project rather than a straight one.
- The height of your fence can also increase your cost. Be conscious of the fence requirements in your area and what you require. 5′ high is our most common height for our iron fencing that offers the security you want without being excessive in height.
Of course, these options add to the overall design and appeal and can take your fence profile up a notch. However, avoiding these can help lower your costs if it’s not in the budget.
INSTALLATION/MAINTENANCE
Q: I’m interested in installing iron fence and have decided on a profile I like. What are my next steps?
A: A good starting point is heading to the “Where to Buy” page on our website. If you only need the iron fence and are installing it yourself, find a retailer/store near you under the “iron fence” filter. They can provide you with pricing and timelines. You can also check out the “Installers” filter on the Where to Buy map if you need your iron fence both supplied and installed.
Tip: To help streamline the process, bring or have a drawing or arial snapshot of the area you’re fencing from Google Maps along with the required linear footage to the dealer you’ve chosen. This will allow them to quote your project a bit faster.
Q: Is iron fence customizable?
A: We sell our iron fence at standard lengths and heights, which meet most project and building code needs. If you need a shorter length to complete your project, either your installer or if installing yourself will have to cut the sections to your project needs. Ensure this apart of the drawings as you would require extra brackets and touch-up paint for any cut sections.
Q: What do I need to know about iron fence before I begin the installation process?
A: Watching our how-to videos is a great start. You should also take a look at shop drawings, post settings, cut sheets (the best area to cut the sections) and hardware allowances (e.g. universal brackets, swivel brackets, wall mount brackets).
Once you’ve taken the time to familiarize yourself with these resources, we suggest drawing out your project with measurements before you begin. Our Quote Form also helps answer some of these questions and provides a spot to draw your fence. It’s built to be filled out digitally or printed if you’re more comfortable filling out a physical copy. It’s a great place to start and you can take the filled-in version to any of our ‘iron fence dealers’ to have the project sent in and quoted by our team.
Q: Are there any regulations or permits required for installing iron fence?
A: Please check with your local building codes and municipality prior to purchasing and installing your iron fence as this is dependent on where you live. Google “Your City” and “Fence Building Codes” to get an idea of the codes in your area. It can be helpful to work with an installer or engineer if you have a more complex project.
Q: Are there any warranties or guarantees for iron fence?
A: We provide a ten-year warranty for iron fence and a fifteen-year warranty for aluminum.
Q: What’s the required maintenance for iron fence?
A: While our iron fence is relatively maintenance-free, occasionally wiping it down with some water and soap will help keep it looking brand-new. Just be sure not to use anything abrasive as scuffing the material can reduce the longevity. If you do scuff your fencing, we provide touch-up paint which is typically used on cut ends, but also perfect for coating any scuffs or scratches that can happen and keeping your iron fence profile looking great and lasting as long as possible.
